Socotra: Wonder World at the Horn of Africa

Socotra, located at the Horn of Africa, has been a treasure trove of evolution and biodiversity since the early 20th century. Here, the Arabian Sea, the coastal waters of East Africa, and the open Indian Ocean converge, creating a unique environment. This led to the development of numerous species found only on Socotra. In 2008, UNESCO recognized Socotra as a World Heritage Site.

Unique Isolation and Traditions

The island’s isolation from the mainland and limited infrastructure meant it was accessible only by ship in the past. The traditions and language of the Sokotris have remained unchanged for centuries. Over 20 million years ago, the Socotra archipelago separated from the Arabian Peninsula. It now sits in the Indian Ocean, about 352 kilometers south of Yemen’s coast and 233 kilometers from the Horn of Africa.

Modern Development

Today, the UAE acts as a “protecting power,” ensuring security, order, and supplies for Socotra’s approximately 43,000 inhabitants through an airlift and developing tourist infrastructure.
