National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC)

Location and Historic Significance

The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) is situated in Fustat. As the first Egyptian capital after the Arab Islamic conquest, Fustat was chosen logically for the museum site. This historic area includes many Coptic churches, monasteries, the Coptic Museum, the Ibn Ezra Temple, and the Amr Ibn Al-Aas Mosque.

Historic Surroundings

From the museum's outdoor spaces, the Citadel of Saladin is visible. These spaces emphasize the unique location overlooking Lake Ain El-Sira, the last natural lake in Cairo.

Museum Opening and Collection

The museum partially opened in 2021. It displays a collection of 50,000 artifacts, presenting Egyptian civilization from prehistoric times to the present day.

Permanent Collection

The permanent collection is divided into two regions: chronological and thematic. The chronological area includes the following periods: Archaic, Pharaonic, Greco-Roman, Coptic, Medieval, Islamic, modern, and contemporary.

Thematic Areas

The thematic areas are: Dawn of Civilization, the Nile, Writing, State and Society, Material Culture, Beliefs and Thinking, and the Gallery of Royal Mummies. This division allows visitors to explore Egyptian civilization from various perspectives.
