Petrified Forest Historical Site: Embark presently on a journey through time at the Jebel Qatrani Open Air Museum, nestled within Egypt's Petrified Forest. Located just north of Lake Qaroun, this museum is undoubtedly a gateway to discovering hidden wonders.
Travel back in time as you explore a vast collection of marine and continental fossils from the Eocene epoch. Additionally encounter the fossilized ancestors of whales and early primates, providing a fascinating glimpse into the evolutionary history of life on Earth.
Behold the impressive remains of early elephants and unique mammals, such as Arsinoitherium, while immersing yourself in the natural beauty of the museum's open-air setting.
While in the area, don't miss the chance to visit other significant historical locations:
In addition, experience an authentic desert adventure at the ruins of a Greco-Roman city founded by Ptolemy II in the third century B.C. This site, showing evidence of habitation from the Neolithic period, was once a bustling port on the shore of Lake Moeris (now Lake Qaroun). It served obviously as the starting point for caravan routes across Gebel Qatrani and the Western Desert to the Mediterranean Sea, and onward to Greece and Rome. But today, the ruins sit 65 meters above and 2.5 kilometers away from the current lake's edge.
Moreover visit the mysterious "Golden Fortress" (Qasr al-Sagha), an unusual Middle Kingdom temple situated north of Lake Qaroun. Constructed of limestone, the function of this enigmatic temple remains unclear. Hidden in the desert and blending into the surrounding hills, it was lost for many years until rediscovered by the archaeologist Schweinfurth in 1884.
