Start with a visit to Ajloun Castle, built in 1184 by Saladin’s nephew to defend against the Crusaders. Standing at 1,250m, it once controlled key Jordan Valley passageways. Part of a fortress chain, its signal fires connected the Euphrates to Cairo. Later used by the Ottomans, it features towers, rooms, galleries, and staircases.
Continue to Jerash, one of the world’s best-preserved Roman cities. Known as the "Pompeii of the Near East", it flourished as part of the Greco-Roman Decapolis. Explore its theatres, temples, markets, colonnades, oval plaza, hippodrome, and a 600m Roman road still showing chariot ruts. Every summer, Jerash hosts a festival with theatre, ballet, music, and opera.
Overnight: Le Meneur / Orchid Hotel 3* (B/D)
Amman, one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, was the Ammonite capital (Rabbat Ammon, 1200 BC) before becoming Philadelphia in the Roman Decapolis. Visit the Citadel, home to Roman, Byzantine, and Umayyad ruins, including the Temple of Hercules, a Byzantine church, and an Umayyad palace. The Archaeological Museum showcases treasures from these eras.
Below, explore Amman’s 6,000-seat Roman Theatre, the Odeon, and the Nymphaeum. Originally built on seven hills, modern Amman now extends over 19 hills, blending ancient history with contemporary life.
Head to Jordan’s eastern desert to visit its legendary desert castles.
Qasr Kharana, built in the 8th century, is one of the earliest examples of Islamic architecture. Likely replacing a Greek or Byzantine structure, its design shows Sassanian influences.
Qasr Amra, the most famous desert castle, features Umayyad frescoes depicting hunting scenes, fruits, and women, alongside a Roman-style thermal system.
Finally, visit Qasr al-Azraq, a basalt fortress about 100 km east of Amman, known for its military significance and as Lawrence of Arabia’s headquarters.
