Day 11, August 9.27: Philae Temple

In the soft morning light, a small motorboat takes us across the waters near Aswan to the island temple of Philae, dedicated to Isis, goddess of magic, motherhood and healing.

Philae was one of the last places where the ancient Egyptian religion was practised, and the latest known hieroglyphic inscription was carved here. When the building of the Aswan dams threatened to submerge it, the entire temple complex was dismantled block by block and rebuilt on the nearby island of Agilkia in a remarkable UNESCO rescue effort.

Stroll through the graceful colonnades, admire the reliefs of Isis and her son Horus, and don't miss the Kiosk of Trajan at the water's edge, one of the most photographed sights in Egypt.

Accommodation: Miskaa House Aswan (BB) or similar

Day 12, August 10.27: Kom Ombo Edfu & Luxor

Today we follow the Nile north from Aswan to Luxor, with two of Egypt's most impressive temples along the way.

High above the river stands Kom Ombo, a rare double temple with two entrances, two sanctuaries and two gods: Sobek, the crocodile god, and Horus the Elder, the falcon-headed sky god. Look out for the reliefs often interpreted as medical instruments, the ancient Nilometer used to measure the river's flood, and the small museum of mummified crocodiles.

At Edfu, two granite falcons guard the entrance to the Temple of Horus, the most complete temple surviving from ancient Egypt. Its towering pylon, roofed halls and dark inner sanctuary give a rare sense of how these temples looked and felt in their day. Reliefs along the walls tell the mythical battle between Horus and his rival Seth.

We travel in comfortable, air-conditioned vehicles and arrive in Luxor in the afternoon / early evening.
