Luxury Desert Camp Egypt – An Adventure in the Sands

I count myself among those passionate desert lovers who prefer nothing more than sleeping directly “in the sand.”

My earliest experiences go back to Algeria. Somewhere between Tamanrasset and Djanet, in the middle of the endless sand desert, I slept for the first time under a glittering sky of stars—and I was so overwhelmed that I burst into tears.

Over the years, I’ve crossed countless dunes. Since moving to Egypt in 2009, the desert has become an almost “everyday companion,” right at my doorstep.

As my mother always used to say: “The first palm trees are always the tallest.”

On the Way to the Abu Mohareq Dunes

Recently, it was time for another desert escape. Together with my husband and friends, we set off for the Abu Mohareq dunes.

Located between the Bahariya and Kharga oases, they form one of the longest continuous dune systems in the world—stretching more than 600 km.

Into the Vastness

The journey begins on the perfectly straight road from Cairo to Bahariya. Monotonous yet meditative, our little caravan rolls on.

Then comes the unmistakable signal that we’re leaving the asphalt: all cars need to deflate their tires so they won’t sink too quickly into the sand.

It’s a friendly ritual. Drivers check the pressure with serious faces while the rest of us stretch our legs and feel the rising excitement of what’s to come.

And then—off we go. The drivers agree on the driving order: the first car finds the best path, the others follow its tracks.

A joyful rollercoaster begins. With momentum, we climb the ridge of a dune—if all goes well!—and the view suddenly opens into infinity. Then we crawl back down carefully, sometimes quite steeply. It feels more like bouncing than driving.

Some crossings flow softly and gently, swinging and tickling in the stomach—almost like flying.

Teamwork in the Desert

Of course, no desert adventure is complete without the occasional soft patch where a car gets stuck.

First come the good tips, then the hands-on help. People push, dig, and slide sand plates under the wheels.

And if nothing works, the tow rope comes out and a vehicle is pulled free from its sandy trap.

A perfect example of teamwork—sweaty, sandy, but full of good humor.

Luxury Desert Camp Egypt: The Golden Hour

Finally, the golden hour descends. The late afternoon light softens, the heat retreats, the shadows grow longer.

We savor the moment, take photos, and quietly know it’s time to look for our campsite.

Out here, you should always arrive before darkness falls.

Glamping – A New Experience

And now, a completely new chapter begins for us. No need to rush to pitch our little igloo tents or stash our belongings.

The “invisible desert elves” have already done the work.

In the middle of the vast dunes, a cluster of tents appears—like a tiny village in the middle of nowhere.

Tonight, we’ll sleep in canvas lodge tents that blend hotel comfort with the magic of the desert.

Wow. Real beds with elegant linens. A table and chairs. A clothing rack, carpets—and even lamps powered by a generator somewhere out in the dark.

Now I truly understand what glamping means: glamorous camping for those who appreciate a bit of comfort now and then.

I already know I’ll enjoy not rummaging through my bag in the dark but simply reaching over to the little shelf to find what I need.

Adventure or Comfort—or Both?

Yes, of course—some might say that true adventure shouldn’t be softened with creature comforts.

And I have spent many nights happily sleeping right in the sand, proud of my “fearless traveler” identity, creating maximum experience with minimal equipment.

But pleasure comes in many forms.

The moment that fully convinced me?
The toilet tent.

No more wandering off into the darkness with a flashlight and wet wipes, hoping the spot I choose is mine alone—no animals, no fellow travelers with the same idea.

Now, I simply stroll to the little toilet tent and look forward to dinner.

Dinner Under the Stars

Some things never change. Our desert cook stirs his pots in the open-air kitchen.

We sip tea, watch the glowing embers beneath the grilling chicken, and relive the day.

And when everyone is full and content, we switch off all lights for a moment to admire the star-filled sky.

I’m sure each of us saw at least one shooting star and whispered a wish into the night.

And I truly believe those wishes have a good chance of coming true.

Tomorrow another day of exploration awaits—but our lodge tents will remain here, waiting for us.
By tomorrow night, it will almost feel like coming home.
