Discover Lesser-Known Archaeological Sites in Egypt

Egypt, the land of the Pharaohs, hides many intriguing sites. Explore lesser-known but captivating archaeological treasures.

First, visit Tuna el-Gebel, the largest cemetery of Greco-Roman Egypt. Located about 270 km south of Cairo, this site reveals temples, houses, tombs, and animal worship. For over a century, archaeologists have unearthed secrets buried in the desert sands. Most structures date back to the Ptolemaic and Roman periods, spanning from 300 BC to 300 AD.

Next, explore El-Ashmonein, a key archaeological site with structures from various eras. Between El-Idara and El-Ashmonein, discover the remains of Hermopolis, an ancient metropolis from Upper Egypt’s fifteenth century, known as the "hare."

Day 1: Arrival and Exploration

8:00 AM: Meet at Cafe Greco, Maadi, Street 9.

Drive for about 3 hours to our private farmhouse. Check-in and enjoy lunch.

In the afternoon, explore nearby sites, including Sheikh Abada and the temple of Ramsis, a lesser-known gem.

Dinner: Enjoy a meal at the farmhouse.

Day 2: Necropolises and Museums

After breakfast, visit Tuna El-Gebel and Ashmonein. We will also try to visit the newly reopened Mellawi Museum.

Lunch: Served on the road.

Tuna El-Gebel: This necropolis, partly covered by sand, features streets of tombs and ruins. Highlights include the Tomb of Petosiris, a fourth-century BC high priest of Thoth. This tomb is designed like a small temple, decorated in Greco-Egyptian style, with much of its original painting intact.

Dinner: Return to the farmhouse.

Day 3: Tell al-Amarna

Dedicate the whole day to exploring Tell al-Amarna, the new capital of Akhenaten.

Day 4: Visit Minya

Explore Minya, also known as Arousset al Sayid. The city is a key link between northern and southern Egypt. Minya, with its high Coptic Christian population, is home to Minya University, the Suzanne Mubarak Center for Arts, the new Minya Museum, and regional media outlets.

Day 5: Farewell and Return

Enjoy leisure time exploring the area, including nearby mountain caves.

After lunch, bid farewell to our hosts. On the way back to Cairo, visit the ancient cemetery of Beni Hassan. This site features elaborate tomb layouts and decorations, marking a transitional style from the Old Kingdom to the New Kingdom.
